The history of
Borgo Antichi Orti
-
The Borgoat the foot of Assisi
Around 1444 a small Benedictine monastery was built "extra moenia", i.e. outside the walls, to which other settlements were added, creating the "little village" at the foot of Assisi, a welcoming outpost of the city.
Borgo evokes tradition, a way of living in communion, in synergy, sustainable.
It has the flavour of the intimate, the reserved, the familiar. -
Antichi Ortibetween experience and tradition
On the site there were terraced vegetable gardens cultivated by sharecroppers at the service of the monks themselves.
They are ancient because they are medieval and evoke characteristics of authenticity, tradition and experience. The cultural and health role played by the monastic orders, particularly the Benedictine, was fundamental.
This order carried out an intense activity of research and production of highly effective medicines, making use of classical medical knowledge (the medical science of the first Universities, the Guild of Physicians and Apothecaries).
The monks, great connoisseurs and users of medicinal herbs, produced catalogues raisonnés of all the herbs they cultivated and used, called Hortuli. -
Assisibetween history and religion
Assisi encapsulates the mystical and religious history of the two most famous orders in the world of Christianity: Benedictines and Franciscans, so Assisi alone evokes the point of conjunction of the orders and geographical location.
